Xochimilco Festival and “Trajinera” (boat) ride

February 17th, 2008 · 1 Comment

I came across this street parade on the way to the boats in Xochimilco and I jumped out of the “pesero” (bus) and followed them around for a few blocks.

In the park there are a few Rainbow Trout farms…

When the keeper throws feed the water looks like it boils when all the trout scramble to get a bite

Otomi Ceremonial Temple with the women in the Siembra program

February 5th, 2008 · 1 Comment

I took the metro early at 7am on Tuesday to meet with Ana a Siembra volunteer at the Cuatro Camoinos bus station. From there we took a 2 hour bus to Temoayan to meet with the women that are in the program. We met with about 10 women and the plan was to go visit the Otomi Ceremonial Temple. We sat and talked for a bit then went to the main road to flag down a taxi or bus. Somehow five of us piled into a taxi and up the hill we went. Once we met everyone at the entrance we went in, made a few photos then had lunch. Each woman had brought a dish and home made tortillas. It was great. After lunch we walked around the temple walked through the museum. It was fun to see the people in the museum’s photographs and the manikins where dressed just like the women in the program. One of the women even pointed out one of her aunts in the museums photos. Time to go home and there were no taxis or busses After 30 minutes of no transport in sight the group decides to walk down the hill a bit to a near by store to see if we can catch a taxi or bus there. Still nothing but out of nowhere a man and his wife pull up in a small pick up truck and offers us a ride….10 women, 4 kids, 2 volunteers and we all jumped in. We all thought it was real funny when we came closer to town and one of the bus drivers called the truck driver a pirate.
